ARE YOU A COUGAR AND PROUD OF IT?

The question of the day, or perhaps the next decade.  If your partner is younger than you are, are you necessarily a cougar? When I'd go out after my husband died, younger men would ask ME for dates, alot. Being in a group of older women who "looked good for our age" apparently got the attention of younger men who would not take no for an answer. These youngees would insist that "age is just a number".

I HATED BEING CALLED A COUGAR!

I know many women who fended off these young guys for years until the guys just wore the older women down! For example, I was asked out by a guy 19 years my junior. He asked me for 15 months before I said yes. On our first date we "sealed the deal" and it was amazing!  We had wonderful times together. In fact, we had to strategically break up. We couldn't stay away from each other so finally he was being transferred to Japan and we decided to have one more "date" before he left.  We used his transfer like it was  a detox program, and promised not to contact each other again when he returned to the states. It worked. That was the closest I got to a "cougar" label of the "nth" degree. But being labeled a cougar is bull****!  This young man sought me out and pursued me for over a year before I said yes.

WHAT IS A COUGAR?

Is it right to be labeled a "cougar" if you're not hunting for younger guys.  If instead, they come for you. I don't recall whether a cougar is hunted by its prey. Do you? I'll look it up....... Let's see, what are the characteristics of the cougar according to wikipedia:

1. Like almost all cats, the cougar is a solitary animal. Only mothers and kittens live in groups, with adults meeting only to mate. It is secretive and crepuscular, being most active around dawn and dusk.

**Ok maybe that definition does fit most of us. We ARE solitary, preferring to be alone with our kids, for the most part, until we have a need to "meet and greet" with the our "prey".

2. Cougars (the animals) prefer meat.

**If we consider men to be the meat, does that mean lesbians can't be cougars and only hetero-women and gay men can?

3. Cougars (the animal) are widely admired in many cultures for their grace and power.

**Ok, I'll accept that one as I pat myself on the back.

4. Cougars don't have many predators. In the north, we ---I mean they---have the brown bear and gray wolf.  In the south, the large jaguar, and in Florida, the American Alligator.

OH, OK, I AM A COUGAR!!!

On second thought, I'm beginning to like being compared to a cougar!!  I may replace my Wonder Woman bedspread with a cougar bedspread!  Maybe what I resent is the idea that society defines being a cougar as  older women who are chasing younger guys.  But the actual cougar 'thang', I'm ok with it now, now that I know how cougars roll (behave).  So, if I'm a cougar are the competitive younger women, brown bears, gray wolves, jaguars, or alligators! And how about you ladies out there?
